Art & Crafts in Ahmedabad

Art & Crafts - Dreams Art Gallery

Ahmedabad has been an important centre of textiles from ancient times. It has developed its own distinct textile identity, reflected in the weave and pattern of the fabric and in the way it is worn. Many parts of the city are known for their Gujarati folk art and crafts. Paldi area is famous for shops selling works of embroidery from Kutch and Saurashtra region. The craftsmen of Rangeela pol are famous for making bandhinis (tie and dye work), while the cobbler shops of Madhupura sell traditional mojri footwear. Beautiful idols of Ganesh and other religious icons are made in huge numbers in the Gulbai Tekra area. The shops at the Law Garden are famous for their mirror work handicraft.

There are some good museums in the city which are famous for their collection of Indian and international fabrics, garments and textiles. The Calico Museum of Textiles has a large collection of Indian and international fabrics, garments and textiles. The Hazrat Pir Mohammad Shah Library has a collection of rare original manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Sindhi and Turkish languages.
